Women’s Business Center to Offer January Classes

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Women’s Business Center (WBC) will present several classes in January.

The Microsoft Word 2007 Basics Series, which will include three classes: Get Familiar with Word, Work with Word, and Apply Skills with Word. The series will begin Jan. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. and will continue Jan. 19 and 26. The classes will be held in the Link Building, Room 327, on campus. The cost for the series is $60 per person.

The series offers a hands-on interactive learning experience in a computer lab. Students should bring a portable USB drive to save the necessary files used in class. Prerequisites include a minimum typing speed of 20-25 w.p.m. and a basic knowledge of computers.

Karen Brown, of the Florida Tech Department of Computer Sciences, will be the class instructor.

A World Class Customer Service seminar, on Jan. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., will be held in the Link Building, Room 323 on campus. The cost is $25 per person.

The class will begin with a quiz that will touch on 25 key points, including those that cover listening to the customer; dealing with customer issues; meeting the customer’s needs; effective customer communication; and effective soft selling.Students will have an opportunity to pick the best solution for each scenario, then discuss the best and least preferred solution in each case.

Michele Black of Pen&Ink LLC will be the presenter. Black attended Rutgers University, where she majored in journalism and German translation. Her passion for writing and desire to provide superior customer service led her to continue her writing education and start her own company. She is the author of the Trinity Mystery Series.

Also on January 13, a Raising Start-up Capital seminar will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Link Building, Room 323 on campus. There is no cost to attend.

The seminar will include information about the upcoming changes to the SBA Loan Programs, which are intended to provide small streamlined loans to small business owners. Other information provided will be about various SBA loan programs as well as alternative sources of financing, such as peer-to-peer lending, factoring and microloans. Finally there will be discussion on how to prepare a loan package for your lender and other borrowing tips.

SBA South Florida District Area Manager Vince LoPresti will be the presenter. LoPresti received his undergraduate degree in banking and finance from Stetson University. He also holds an MBA in banking and investments from Hofstra University.

On Jan. 19, a “Create Your Own Marketing Message” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Link Building, Room 323, on campus. The cost is $25 per person.

Participants will learn from a marketing expert what makes a great marketing message and how to create one. Participants also will be asked for answers to a series of questions about their business and their competitors’ business to support creation of a custom marketing message. Complimentary one-on-one counseling will follow the workshop.

Robin Cramp, a SCORE (Counselors to America’s Small Business) counselor, will be the presenter.
