Panthers, Tars Stalemate
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Soccer) – In a double overtime game that was interrupted by a
stoppage of play due to lightning, neither team could gain an advantage. Florida Tech’s record went to 5-3-1 as they tied, 0-0, with the Rollins College
Tars on Saturday.
Neither team could put one in for a score, but Rollins had an overwhelming advantage in shot total. The Tars shot 31 times, including 15 in the
second half. However, the Tars weren’t hitting accurate shots. They were shooting from far outside the box, but sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Pyles was able to save the 11
shots on goal in a fantastic performance. Pyles was everywhere near the goal, jumping high and diving low. The Tars could get nothing past her.
The Panthers had more quality, high-percentage shots, with more than half of their shots coming on goal. Florida Tech forced five saves on nine shots by
sophomore forward Teresa
Brantley, freshman midfielder Matilda Östergaard, sophomore midfielder
Therese Svensson,
sophomore defender Jennifer
Gillette, freshman midfielder Ali Ronk and four shots from freshman
midfielder Kelli Ragan.
Head coach Fidgi Haig did complement the play of sophomore
defender Rachel Devlin.
After two tough games, he said Devlin really bounced back to put forth a good performance in Saturday’s match.
“She kept things organized back there,” Haig said. “She really turned in a great performance in this match.”
The match was halted with 9:08 left in the first overtime due to lightning within a 10-mile radius. Play resumed at 5:30 p.m. and neither team could stick
one in for the win.
Florida Tech’s next action will be in Saint Leo, Fla. at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 6, to take on the Saint Leo Lions.
