Panther Women Win 2006 Smoothie King Cross Country Invitational While Men Place 5th Overall
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (cross country) — The Florida Tech Panther women’s cross country team produces a repeat performance at the Smoothie King/Embry Riddle
Invitational taking the women’s title for the second straight year. With the top five women scoring in the top 20 Tech finished with a final score of 57
and an average 5K time of 21:28.65. For their top performance beating twelve other colleges including SSC opponent’s Nova Southeastern, Rollins and Saint
Leo along with NCAA DII south region opponent Valdosta State the Panther notch their first team win on the 2006 season.
The men on the other hand produced a solid performance bringing home 5th place with a score of 126 out of nine teams. The average time 8K time for the
Panthers was 32:03.74. Tech placed ahead of DI opponent Stetson and two SSC competitors Saint Leo and Rollins.
Junior Carolyn Salois (Palm Bay, Fla.) led all lady Panthers grabbing the silver with a time of 20:22.64. She was the top SSC runner for the event. Also
placing in the top 20 for Florida Tech was freshman Megan Pierce (Seely, Wis.) who notched 10th place with a time of 21:26.93. Coming in two seconds later
taking 11th place was senior Jamie Wagner (Arlington Heights, Ill.) at 21:28.51.
Freshman Jennifer Lindsay (Sugar Grove, Ill.)and Nicole Aia (Stormville, N.Y.) rounded out the top five placing 16th (21:58.35) and 18th (22:06.82)
respectively. Rounding out the team was junior Trevi Jenkins (Towson, Md.) finishing with a 24:25.63 time placing 50th.
On the women’s side Florida Tech took first with a 57, while Nova Southeastern came in second with a 79 team score. Host Embry-Riddle placed 3rd (80 pts.),
Savannah College of Art & Design placed 4th (114 pts.) while Valdosta State took the 5th place spot with 116 points. Stetson, Rollins, Flagler,
Pasco-Hernando CC and LaGrange College finished 5th thru 10th in order. Finishing off the competitors were Saint Leo in 11th, Johnson & Wales in 12th
and Edward Waters placing 13th.
On the men’s side host ERAU took first with 20 points. NSU placed second with 57 points, while Savannah took third with 78 team points. Valdosta State
placed only six points better than Tech at 120 and the Panthers finished 5th with 126 team points. Stetson, Rollins, Saint Leo and LaGrange rounded out the
teams at 6th thru 9th place.
Senior Jared Doescher (Hillsboro, Oregon) led the way for the crimson and gray duffers. Doescher finished 13th with an 8k time of 29:58.11. Technically
finishing 9th among collegiate runners with three unattached participants finishing in the top ten. Junior Joe Peterson (Litchfield, New Hampshire) was the
only other Panther to finish in the top 30 with a 29th place finish (20th among collegiate runners) with a 31:15.28 time. Fellow junior David Stephens
(North Royalton, Ohio) was Tech’s third runner to reach the chute with a 34th place (24th among collegiate runners) ran a 31:48.07 8K time.
Rounding out the counters were junior hoofers’ Sam Golden (Ft. Myers, Fla.) at 49th with a 33.20.2 2 time and Shane Ferguson (Buena Vista, Va.) at 53rd
with a 33:56.98 time. Senior Andy Herron (Jacobs, Penn.) finished 55th running a 34:55.21 race, freshman Kyle Kirk (Warrenton, Va.) grabbed 58th place
running 35:14.81 and freshman Calvin Emory (York, Pennsylvania) raced a 36:34.38 64th finish.
