Adjunct Professor Earns Teaching Excellence Award

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Russell Jacques, Florida Institute of Technology adjunct professor, was selected as the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Member by the Association
for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) south region. Currently teaching accounting and finance for the university, he has taught at Florida Tech since
1986.

One who nominated Jacques said, “He is one of the only instructors we have seen who can help students see the real need for accounting in their careers and
create a genuine interest in the topic. His teaching techniques — group discussion, streaming video, real world examples and testing — create a comprehensive
course that builds a solid foundation in financial accounting.”

In his acceptance speech, Jacques said, “In my 10 or so years of teaching online, I’ve seen quite a bit of change from a technological point of view. It is
all very exciting but we’ve only begun to exploit the power of this method of delivering education. . . With the advent of the Internet as a course
delivery approach, we no longer require the student to come to the institution. . . We are making the dream of a higher education a reality for many more
students.”

The ACHE recognizes excellence in teaching by modeling effective teaching behaviors, demonstrating techniques to motivate students and exhibiting a caring
attitude toward students.

This award is presented annually by each of the organization’s eight United States regions. This is the second time that a Florida Tech faculty member has
been recognized for this award. Previously, Donald Dement, who continues to teach for the university, was recognized.
