‎MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at Florida Institute of Technology announces its summer 2012 workshops. “Fabric Postcards” will be presented Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a second workshop titled “Enhancing Machine Appliqué” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both events will be held in the Science Education Lab (Building 405, Room 107), which is located on the university campus in the classroom quad off Country Club Road.

In “Fabric Postcards” participants will join presenter Laurel Merrill for three hours of fun—transforming fabric scraps, card foundations, crayons, threads and markers into post office-acceptable, one-of-a-kind post cards.Provided kits will include materials necessary to make four to five postcards. Guests may also bring their own sewing machine and supplies to embellish their fabrics.

Nancy Stewart will present “Enhancing Machine Appliqué” on Aug. 4. This workshop will introduce ways to create and enhance machine appliqué by using Tsukeniko inks and Pebeo Setacolor paints. Both products are non-toxic and water-based. Each participant will ink-dye fabrics to use in creating a sunflower and their own appliqué hat. Participants will also learn basic brush strokes and color mixing techniques; how to incorporate Texture Magic for added dimension; how to create an appliqué from a picture; and more.

Admission for each workshop is $25 for the general public and $20 for Friends of Textiles members. All skill levels are welcome. Please RSVP to textiles@fit.edu or call (321) 674-8313.
