Florida Tech Presents Lifelong Scholar Lecture About Indian River Lagoon System Sept. 24

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology presents “Seagrasses of the Indian Lagoon System: Limitations After 100 Million Years of Adaptation,” Sept. 24, one of six presentations in the Lifelong Scholar Society fall lecture series. The presentation will be by Florida Tech Associate Professor Dick Turner, Biological Sciences Department. The hour-long 6 p.m. lecture is open to the public and will be held at the Harris Community Auditorium of the Foosaner Art Museum in downtown Eau Gallie. A 30-minute discussion segment will follow.

Seagrasses have a long history of adaptation to life in the sea, especially to heavy grazing by herbivores such as sea urchins, green turtles and manatees. However, their adaptations and the conditions in the sea place limits on the ability of seagrasses to respond to rapid environmental change and disturbance. Understanding these limitations should help us confront problems in managing and restoring seagrass beds, which form critical habitats in coastal regions worldwide.
