Satellite High School Students Win Florida Techs Business Ethics Competition

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Students from seven high school teams were challenged by ethical questions in the Florida Tech College of Business’ 11th Annual High School Business Ethics Competition. In the daylong event, held March 9, juniors and seniors from seven Brevard County high schools competed by developing and analyzing solutions to thorny ethical problems.

They focused on Malden Mills, a Massachusetts company that experienced a devastating fire in 1995. Ethics questions focused on decisions made by the owner following the fire.
The event was sponsored by Community Educators Credit Union, the Gannett Foundation and Florida Today. Judges for the competition, from a variety of career fields, included many prominent members of the community.

In first place was the Satellite High School team, coached by Joe Scott. The team included students Jessica Stern, Katherine Fraser, Melissa Goude and Roya Tran. The second-place team, Melbourne High School Team No. 2, coached by Diane Grover, included students Christopher LaDrew, Danielle Quinlivan and Kate Torrington. The third-place team, Eau Gallie High School, was coached by Joe
Ferrante. It included students Courtney Armstrong, Brianne Mengal, Kyle Droll and Caroline Perkowski.
The awards were: $500 per member to the first-place team, $250 per member to the second-place team and $125 per member to the third place team. Also, each member of the top team receives an award of a four-year $8,000-per-year scholarship to the College of Business. A four-year $6,000-per-year scholarship to the college goes to each member of the second-place team.

Other participating schools were Bayside, Holy Trinity, Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach high schools.
