High School Students to Test Ocean Knowledge at Florida Tech Event May 16

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology will hold an InSTEP Ocean Science Bowl competition Saturday, May 16, at 8:30 a.m. InSTEP (Integrated
Science Teaching Enhancement Partnership) is a partnership between Florida Tech and Brevard Public Schools, funded by the National Science Foundation.

The competition, open to the public, will be held in the F.W. Olin Life Sciences 
Building auditorium. Four teams from the participating InSTEP high schools, Bayside,
Satellite, Cocoa, and Melbourne, will answer ocean-related questions in a round-robin
style. These include biology, chemistry, geology and physics as well as technology. The
primary moderator is Gary Wolfe, an Eau Gallie High School marine science teacher
and longtime National Ocean Science Bowl coach. Ralph Turingan, Ph.D., Florida Tech
professor of biological sciences, will also moderate.

Coaches are Florida Tech graduate teaching fellows of the InSTEP program.
They are Michelle Meadows and Casey Boleman of Bayside High School; Meghan
Buckley and Tania Rozgaja of Melbourne High School; Carolyn Horst and Will Ulrich
of Satellite High School; and Brittany Burke of Cocoa High School.

The event is modeled after the National Ocean Science Bowl, a competition
sponsored by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education. It is
designed to increase student understanding and knowledge of ocean-related topics and fields.
