Tech finishes above .500 winning thirteen matches at ITA Regional
LAKELAND, Fla. – (Tennis) Tech finishes above .500 winning thirteen matches at the ITA Regional Championships. The #4 seeded pair of Keith Kessler
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Clifford Giel (Savaneta, Aruba) won three double matches heading into the final two in the semifinals facing the #2 seeded Lorenzo
Cava and Dennis Reinert from Lynn. Unfortunately the pair had to retire ahead 3-4 and the Lynn tandem won by default to make the championship game later
that afternoon.
The senior pair were up a service break with Tech serving 15 love, when Giel turned his ankle on the serve. Despite the tough finish, the team had headed
into the match with everything in their favor including the extra rest that the Lynn team did not have still playing on the single side.
Head Coach Bill Macom stated, “The team really had the best turn-out in his two short years of the four-year old program…They actually played great doubles
the entire tournament and I was impressed by Jon Hanna who had a great opening tournament.”
Combined, the women’s and men’s teams notched a program-best best 13 wins in 25 matches played for a .520 winning percentage. The men went .500 winning
nine of their 18 matches, while the women went above the bar with a .571 record taking four matches out of the seven played.
On Saturday, Giel and Kessler defeated Presbyterian duo of Aaron Chapman and Matt Martin 9-8. Freshman Jonathan Hanna (Nassau, Bahamas) upset John Bonner
from Eckerd 6-3, 6-4 in back-draw action. Advancing to the back-draw semifinals, Hanna unfortunately succumbed to Florida Southern’s Nick Berning 7-6
(7-5), 6-4 in Tech’s final single action of the ITA regionals.
Also finishing off play on Saturday, senior Christina Smith (Arouca, Trinidad) and Hanna fell to Greg Heartt and Justin LaFlamme of Florida Southern 8-6 in
the doubles back-draw.
