5 Reasons We Need More Space Engineers

With many countries' space programs being cut back or floundering, some may wonder if the world needs more space engineers. Will there still be jobs for new graduates? Is it a wise career path? Without a doubt, the answer to all of these questions is an unequivocal "yes." Here are five reasons why we need more, not fewer, space engineers. 1. Space engineers do more than just work on spacecraft. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, aerospace engineers also work with military aircraft, commercial aircraft, helicopters, satellites and missiles. They design the structures themselves as well as the software and electronics that keep them running. They conduct research into new technologies, and they also test prototypes to make sure they work the way they are supposed to. As private space travel continues to develop and prepare for future launch, there may also be opportunities to work for private companies to develop, design and test spacecraft and programs for private space travel. 2. Many modern inventions have come from space engineers. Research by NASA and other engineers has produced many modern technologies that have enriched our lives, including LED lighting technology, ear thermometers that have made it so much easier to take one's temperature, and memory foam that is now used in everything from mattresses to athletic shoes. Without the research done by space engineers, many of the conveniences and medical advances we now have may not even exist. 3. Space engineers can imagine the future. By studying theories of mathematics, physics, and other sciences, space engineers can use their imaginations to envision what future technologies and advances might enable us to do. While those outside the engineering community (authors, designers, etc.) may have ideas about future technologies as well, they typically lack the scientific knowledge to be accurate and realistic in their imaginings. 4. Space engineers stretch the boundaries of what's possible. So many jobs focus on staying safe, not taking risks, and complying with government regulations. These are all important areas of focus, but space engineers deal more in theoretical and research-based aspects of aviation and aeronautics, which allows them to explore and push forward past what is currently being done in their fields. Pushing the boundaries is part of what is expected of space engineers, so that the fields can continue to advance. 5. To mentor the next generation. Exceptional space engineers are needed to be teachers and instructors for future students. It really isn't true that those who can't make it in the field become teachers. The best teachers have a wealth and breadth of experience on which to draw and share with their students, as well as the skills to help them grow and develop their own skills.
