Tech Honors Seniors in Last SSC Baseball Home Stand

MELBOURNE, Fla. (baseball) – In the SSC double header against the #7 ranked Spartans from the University of Tampa, the Florida Tech Panthers were swept by
Tampa 5-0 in game one and 6-1 in game two. Prior to the game, the Panthers applauded and awarded their eight graduating seniors in Tech’s last home SSC
series.

The eight seniors who were sent off with gratitude and appreciation were left handed pitcher Mike McFadden (Richmond Hill, Ontario), right handed pitcher Matt Woods (Lake Hamilton, Fla.), outfielder
Will Lanier (Jacksonville, Fla.), right
handed pitcher Jody Danca (Naples,
Fla.), left handed pitcher Jay Crouse
(Naples, Fla.), outfielder Mike Messana
(Pinehurst, NC), first basemen Eamonn
Powers
(Staten Island, NY), and shortstop Steve Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario). Each
player was acknowledged with their career and best stats and sent off with a standing ovation for all their hard work and all memories that were spent
playing baseball at Florida Tech.

After the festivities, the Panthers faced off against the highly ranked #7 University of Tampa in game one of the double header. The game started off
evenly matched as both starting pitchers were throwing a strong game. Tech starting pitcher Mike Piazza (Pt. St. Lucie, Fla.) struck out four Spartan
batters while getting five ground outs and two pop outs in the first four innings.

On the offensive side, the Panthers struggled as Michael Demma (Coral Springs, Fla.) was the only Tech player to reach second base after his third stolen
base of the year prior to reaching first after being hit by a pitch. Brendan Twomey (Boca Raton, Fla.) was Tech’s lone batter to get a base hit through the
first four innings as he roped one back up the middle.

Tampa in the fifth scored all five of their runs as they went on a five run four hit inning taking a 5-0 lead; the five runs in the fifth eventually gave
the Spartans the cushion to take the game and shut out the Panthers.

Tech had opportunities to score some runs in the fifth inning as they got two runners on as Demma got his lone hit of the game and with Sam Palace’s
(Clarkston, Mich.) base hit put runners on first and second but Tampa would escape without any damage done. In the sixth, the Panthers had runners at the
corners after Twomey smacked a double to the right field fence and a walk to Eamonn Powers (Staten Island, NY) but again the threat was eliminated. Tech
managed to get six hits in the ballgame but with leaving six runners on base throughout the game, the panthers could push a run in.

Twomey was the lone Panther to have a multi hit game with two base hits and double going 3-for-4. Demma, Palace, and Lanier were the other three Tech
players to gather hits in the 5-0 loss. Piazza who didn’t have a loss to his record coming into the game received his first loss of the year after giving
up five runs and seven hits. Piazza in his 4.1 innings of pitching did strike out five batters while getting five groundouts and two fly outs is now 7-1 on
the year.

Game 2

In game two the Panthers did manage to score one run but again was shutdown by the Spartans pitching as Tech ended up on the losing end 6-1.

The Panthers pushed the first run of the game over in the second inning as Sam Palace reached with his lone hit of game and with a double by Eric Trillas
(Hialeah, Fla.) Tech led 1-0 after the second inning.

Tampa answered in the third tying the game up as they led the inning off with a base hit. An executed sacrifice bunt pushed the runner to second and with
their second hit of the inning, Tampa tied the game at 1-1. The Spartans in the fourth captured the lead scoring two runs on three consecutive base hits to
take a 3-1 lead. Tampa would push their lead and final score to 6-1 after scoring two more runs in the sixth as their second base hit of the inning cleared
the bases and Tampa’s final run would be pushed across after a two hit seventh inning.

Tech only managed to gather four hits against the Spartans pitcher in game two. Steve Condotta got Tech’s first hit with his second triple of the year to
the right field corner but it was his only hit of the game. Trillas who smack his fifth double of the year drove in the lone run as Sam Palace hit a
seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield and scored on Trillas’s double. Twomey in the third was the second Panther to hit a double in the
game but that was his only hit throughout the game.

#25 Tech has fallen to 28-19 overall and is now 11-10 in the SSC; the Panthers will host Nova Southeastern University on Tuesday, April 24th in a
non-conference match up against the Sharks starting at 3pm.
