Basketball Hall of Famer Pete Gillen to Speak at Florida Tech Homecoming Tip-off Luncheon Oct. 25

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology anticipates the start of basketball season with guest speaker Pete Gillen at the Tip-off Luncheon Oct. 25 in the Hartley Room, Denius Student Center. The 11:30 a.m. event is part of Homecoming 2013.

Gillen, currently a college basketball analyst with the CBS Sports Network, is a former college basketball head coach of the Division I Xavier Musketeers, Providence Friars and Virginia Cavaliers, and is a member of the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. He was a two-sport athlete in baseball and basketball at Fairfield University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature in 1968.

Among his awards, Gillen received the 1994 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championship Gold Medal; he was inducted into the Xavier University Sports Hall of fame, Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame, 5-Star Basketball Hall of Fame and Jim Valvano Nike Basketball of Fame. He was assistant coach under Don Nelson for the U.S. national team during the 1994 FIBA World Championship, winning the gold medal.

Luncheon registration opens Oct. 1 and closes Oct. 18. The cost is $25 for non-Panther Club members and $20 for Panther Club members. In a drawing two names will be drawn to win an honorary coaching spot at one of Florida Tech’s Men’s and Women’s home games.
