Florida Tech Free Autism-Related Workshop June 22: Science and Nonsense in Autism Treatment

  Florida Institute of Technology’s School of Psychology offers free workshops of particular interest to parents, educators and professionals who deal with issues of autism. The next will be on June 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Scott Center for Autism Treatment seminar room. It’s titled, “Science and Nonsense in Autism Treatment: How to tell if what they’re selling is what you’re buying.”
The presenter is Josh Pritchard, BCBA, board member of the Association for Science in Autism Treatment and faculty member of the Florida Tech Applied Behavior Analysis program.

The workshop will provide parents with information needed to sift through the myriad treatments being peddled for autism to help identify what has evidence that it works and what does not. During this workshop, parents will be given some red flags for pseudo-scientific claims and a brief explanation of the scientific peer review process. If parents are interested in a particular treatment that does not have scientific evidence, this workshop will provide tips for trying the approaches to determine whether they work or not. A list of resources will be provided, helping parents to quickly identify if a treatment is backed by science.

On July 29 the Scott Center for Autism Treatment will present “Behavior Basics Boot Camp: Making Your Classroom More Manageable.” This will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with lunch included. The cost is $50. For more information, use the contact information below.
