Civic Leader Named as George M. Skurla Award Winner at Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, FLA. –  Mark P. Brewer, A.A.E., a 1975 graduate of the Florida Institute of Technology College of Aeronautics, will receive this year’s
George M. Skurla Outstanding Alumni Award at the School of Aeronautics’ annual Homecoming Luncheon on Oct. 13. Brewer is president and CEO of the Rhode
Island Airport Corporation and Rhode Island state aviation director.
He has worked for the Rhode Island Airport Corporation since 1997 and has served as president and CEO since 2004, overseeing a six-airport system with 160
employees and an annual budget of $44 million. Previously, Brewer held executive and management positions at airports in four other states.
Brewer earned the Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) designation in 1989. He has served in a volunteer capacity in numerous roles at regional, national
and international levels for the American Association of Airport Executives, the industry’s leading professional association.
“Mark is an excellent airport manager,” said Evan Futterman, 1978 College of Aeronautics graduate and chairman of Aviation Services for HNTB Corporation.
“He is an excellent role model for students interest in airport management careers.”
Instituted in 1996, the George M. Skurla Outstanding Alumni Award honors a Florida Tech alumnus with a degree in aeronautics or aerospace engineering, and
at least ten years of experience in the field. In addition, the recipient must possess a demonstrated commitment and an exemplary record in advancing the
aviation and aerospace industry.
George M. Skurla, for whom the award is named, was a retired chairman and president of Grumman Aerospace Corporation as well as a Florida Tech trustee and
benefactor. He passed away in late 2001.
