New President’s Scholar Has 4.5 GPA
MELBOURNE, FLA. —Florida Institute of Technology has named Amilea Borel as a 2010 President’s Scholar. A senior at Bay High School in Panama City, Fla., Borel has a weighted 4.5 grade point average and ranks third in her class of 257. She is the daughter of Ray and Karen Borel.
In addition to her academic excellence, Borel is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and Tri M honor societies, the Bay High School Choir where she has received numerous awards and honors, Interact Service Club and First Priority Christian Club. She has been named an Advanced International Certificate of Education Cambridge Scholar and a National Merit Commended Scholar.
Borel has accrued more than 130 hours of community service participating in clean-up efforts for families devastated by tornados in Kansas and volunteering in mission trips and in recycling drives at local rescue missions. She has spent many volunteer hours at the Henderson Settlement in Kentucky and, as an active member in her church, she is a representative on the church council.
Last summer, Borel was chosen to attend the Florida Governor’s School for Space Science and Technology at Kennedy Space Center, a program offered by Florida Tech and NASA for gifted high school seniors. From more than 300 applicants, she was one of 30 selected.
When she witnessed her first shuttle launch two years ago, Borel was again reminded of her dream to become an astronaut. At the Governor’s School, she was mentored and inspired by Sam Durrance, a former astronaut and Florida Tech professor in the Department of Physics and Space Sciences.
“After touring the Governor’s School campus, learning from its finest professors and seeing the passion both faculty and students put into their studies, it became evident that this school is something special,” Borel said. “I now believe wholeheartedly that Florida Tech is by far the best option to prepare me for a career in the space industry.”
The President’s Scholar Award provides a full four-year tuition scholarship.
