Cornelius Pitches Shutout as Panthers Split Doubleheader
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Panther freshman Jonathan Cornelius (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) pitched a four-hit shutout today against visiting Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA),
giving Tech a doubleheader split this afternoon. Tech dropped the first game 4-3 but recovered with a 2-0 win in game two.
Junior Nick Brennan (Detroit, Mich.) went a combined 6-8 in both of today’s games, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Senior Eamonn Powers (Staten
Island, NY) showed off his power today in game one, smacking a two-run homerun over the left field wall; it was the only round-tripper of the day and
Powers’ third on the year.
In the first game the Panthers jumped out to an early lead. Powers smacked his two-run blast with senior Steve Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario) on base in
the first inning. In the third inning the home team scored again when Nick Brennan crossed the plate on a fielding error by the catcher with the bases
loaded, bringing the score to 3-0.
In the fourth the Sailfish cut the lead to one, scoring two runs on three walks, a wild pitch, a sac fly, and a single (the only hit of the inning). PBA
tied the game in the following inning when senior Blaze Lambert (Fort Worth, Tex.) touched home on an RBI-single off the bat of junior Mariano Jimenez
(Bradenton, Fla.).
Tech put together a strong offensive effort in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases while accumulating four hits. The visitors managed to hold the
Panthers scoreless however, and the fifth inning ended with the bases still loaded.
The Sailfish pushed the winning run across in the top of the sixth off a Blaze Lambert RBI-double against Tech junior relief pitcher Brett Backman
(Ontario, Canada). The run, although unearned, gave the loss to Backman and the Panthers.
Sophomore Mike Piazza (Pt. St. Lucie, Fla.) started the game for the Panthers. He went four and two thirds and allowed five hits, three runs, and three
walks while striking out three. Backman came in relief in the fifth and finished the game for Tech, allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking
out three. The loss brings Backman’s record to 2-2 on the season.
Senior Mike Doneth (Palm City, Fla.) pitched a complete game for the Sailfish. He went the distance, throwing nine innings while allowing five hits, three
runs, and three walks while striking out three. Doneth picked up his first win of the season, and is now 1-1.
Game two was a pitching duel between the visitor’s senior Joel Gossett (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Tech’s Jon Cornelius, with both pitchers going the
distance.
Tech jumped out to another early lead in game two, scoring a pair in the first inning. Junior Brandon Veronee (Chester, Va.) smacked a two-run single,
driving in Nick Brennan and Steve Condotta, for the only two runs of the game. Tech managed to spread out three more hits through the game, but could not
score another run.
Cornelius showed amazing control on the mound, pitching all seven innings and allowing only four hits and no walks while striking out four. Gossett was
almost as impressive, pitching six innings and allowing five hits, two runs, and no walks while striking out six Panthers. The win marked Cornelius’ first
of his collegiate career, as he is now 1-0.
With the split the Panthers are now 12-6 on the season; the Sailfish sit at 4-14. Tech continues their home stretch this week, hosting Concordia (NY) on
Monday and then Felician (NJ) on Tuesday. Monday’s game is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm.
