DAgostino Leads Tech with Medalist Honor to a Team Second Place Finish
VIERA, Fla. — The Florida Tech Men’s Golf Team finish two strokes shy of the championship title after leading the 2007 Panther Invitational in the first two
rounds at the Duran Golf Club. The Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast pulled it together in the final round to take the 4th annual Panther Invite with a winning
score of 892, while Tech finished a close second with 894. After holding the low round on the first round a 297 and a 299 second round they finished with a
298 on the third round.
“I have more faith in the Tech men’s golf team this season than in the past three year’s I have been involved with the golf program,” said head coach Pat
Cappola. “This year should take the men’s golf team to a higher level we have seen in the four year history.”
Leading the way for Tech, along with topping the three round leader board of the Par 74 course and 7,127 yardage course was David D’Agostino (Melbourne,
Fla.). D’Agostino notches his first collegiate career medalists honors shooting a one over for the entire tourney with 73-72-72 for the winning total of
217. The math education major finished one stroke better than the second place finisher Devin Spies, from local opponent Brevard Community College, despite
Spies grabbing the Invitational low round in the final eighteen with a 67 for a three round tally of 218.
“All of David’s hard work, practice ethic, and dedication has paid huge dividends,” said Cappola. “I am extremely pleased with his accomplishments on and
off the course as a student-athlete.”
Eighteen different teams entered along with ten individuals from fifteen different schools and one international academy. A total of 99 players golfed in
the fourth annual Panther Invitational. Six different Sunshine State Conference schools participated including the Crimson and Gray duffers. Other teams
included fellow NCAA Division II and NAIA institutions along with an international program that came from as far away as France to play.
SSC opponents Lynn University, Nova Southeastern University, Eckerd College, Saint Leo University and the University of Tampa took the opportunity to play
a pre-SSC tournament at the Duran Golf Club.
Also finishing in the top five as an awardee included Tech’s junior Dan Moline (Duluth, Minn.) pushing forward to a 3rd place finish despite a shoulder
injury. Moline jumped five places to grab the bronze honors with a 76-75-71 for a 222 three-round score. Moline was the only Panther to shoot below par in
the entire 54 holes.
“I was in the emergency room all night on Thursday with Danny due to a shoulder separation, he iced it and did not swing until Sunday night, ” said
Capolla. “He played 36 holes on Monday and the final round today without complaint…it was a miracle that he could even play let alone playing one of the
best three rounds in his life.”
Senior Justin Regier (East Amherst, N.Y.) also concluded the invite in the top ten tied for 8th place finishing with a 73-76-76 for a 225. Seniors’ Jeff
Wittup (Calgary, Alberta) and Anthony Klingensmith (Kissimmee, Fla.) rounded out the Florida Tech “A” Team (Red Team) at 26th and 40th respectively with
Wittup shooting a 230 and Klingensmith a 235.
Florida Tech’s B team (Yellow Team) placed 15th out of 18 teams with a team tally of 322-317-321 for a 960. Sophomore Thad Clancy (Los Alamos, N.M.) led
his five with a 37th place finish. He shot a 79-76-78 for the three days for a 233. Freshman David Thompson (Pace, Fla.) made his first collegiate
appearance shooting a 241 (80-76-85) for the two days. One stroke off was freshman Christian Vezjak (Cochabamba, Bolivia) with a 69th finish at 81-81-80
for 242. Sophomore Jason Giffin (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and freshman Cory Menter (Jacksonville, Fla.) rounded out the yellow team finishing tied for 86th
place.
Tech also had two individuals out of the 10 allotted spots. Newcomer and freshman William Portofollio (Ridgewood, N.J.) and sophomore Tim Lamb (Locust
Valley, N.Y.) were the final two of the eighteen man Panther Roster that earned spots into the tourney. Portofollio played well finishing tied for 59th
shooting 77-79-84 for a three round 240, while Lamb placed tied for 76th with a 245 (82-77-86)54 hole event.
Florida Tech will be back in action in two weeks traveling to Valdosta, Georgia to golf in the Blazer Invitational at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club on
