Day Two of ITA Regional Action

LAKELAND, Fla. – (Tennis) After the best day one ITA Regional start in the programs’ history with both the women and the men combining for seven wins out
of eleven matches, Tech still has three men’s players advancing to day three of the 2006 ITA Regional competition.

The #4 seeded pair of Keith Kessler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Clifford Giel (Savaneta, Aruba) opened up the day shutting down the Eagles from Florida Gulf Coast
tandem of Alex Gjesten and Alberto Gutierrez 8-2. Giel and Kessler have now advanced to the Quarterfinal action.

In the second round of the men’s back draw action freshman Jonathan Hanna (Nassau, Bahamas) upset Barry’s David Barragan 6-2, 6-1. Hanna will now face Jon
Bonner of Eckerd College tomorrow in the back draw singles quarterfinals.

Hanna and senior teammate Christian Smith (Arouca, Trinidad) advance on to the quarterfinal doubles round after Florida Gulf Coast’s Brenton Bacon and
Andrew Karn chose to default.

After a flawless first day going undefeated on the women’s side, the Panthers unfortunately faced top ranked players (seeded #1 and #2) and were both
eliminated. Freshman newcomer Natalia Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) jumped out early to defeat Lynn’s Leigh Shelton in second round action 1-6, 6-1, 10-8
only to face #2 Ildiko Csordas of Barry falling 6-1, 6-3 in quarterfinal action.

Sophomore Michaela Horvathova (Bratislava, Slovakia) fell in her only single match of the day to #1 seeded Tasi Purcell of Rollins 6-3, 6-0. Both players’
teamed up in second round doubles action succumbing to #2 seeded tandem Alex Schunk and Vici Weltz from Lynn 8-2.
