Florida Tech Named to President’s Community Service Honor Roll for Fifth Straight Year
Florida Institute of Technology has again been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The recognition lauds the university for exemplary community efforts. This is the fifth consecutive year that Florida Tech has achieved this national recognition.
“Civic engagement is not simply taught; it is a lived experience,” said Florida Tech President Anthony J. Catanese. “The university is pleased to receive this national honor for our dedication to our community and to making the world a better place. Our students, faculty and staff engage very seriously in their commitment to helping others.”
According to Cassandra McGuire Carnley, assistant dean for student activities, through December 2010, 1,993 individual student, staff and faculty volunteers donated more than 83,000 community and campus service hours. These volunteers assisted 51 local and national non-profit organizations through service and fundraising, collecting over $161,000. In academic year 2010-2011, volunteers participated in the Habitat for Humanity’s national alternative spring break program, Collegiate Challenge, helping families in Tacoma, Wash. In February, the campus community also took part in the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ABC-TV show effort in building a home for a family in Canaveral Groves.
The Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized more than 600 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. On campuses across the country, thousands of students joined their faculty to develop innovative programs and projects to meet local needs using the skills gained in their classrooms. Business students served as consultants to budget-strapped nonprofits and businesses, law students volunteered at legal clinics, and dozens of others organized anti-hunger campaigns.
