First Day Wrapup: 2005 Chatham Orthopaedics Pirate Volleyball Classic

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Marathon matches were the theme in the first day of competition at the 2005 AASU/Chatham Orthopaedics Volleyball Classic in Savannah, Ga.,
on Friday. Five matches went the distance, including the first two matches of the day, as play concluded with four teams earning perfect 2-0 marks.

No. 14-ranked Florida Southern, the only ranked squad in the field, breezed with two easy three-game wins on Friday. The Mocs knocked off USC Aiken, 3-0,
then got 20 kills from Beverly Stasis in blanking the host AASU Pirates, 3-0. Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras also went 2-0 on Friday with a 3-1 win over
Lenoir-Rhyne, but saw a 2-0 lead against USC Upstate slip away before winning a decisive fifth game, 15-12, to down the Spartans. Florida Gulf Coast also
picked up two wins with a 3-0 victory over Francis Marion and a five-game thriller against Presbyterian, handing the Blue Hose its first loss of the season
with a 17-15 win in game five. The fourth team to pick up two wins was Rollins, who downed Augusta State, 3-0, then handed Wingate its first loss of the
season, 3-1, behind 17 kills from Julia Caner.

Other five-game matches saw USC Aiken bump off Catawba and Catawba beat host Armstrong Atlantic – each time the team that held a two games to one lead
dropped the final two.

In other first-day action, Presbyterian knocked off Florida Tech, 3-0; USC Upstate defeated Eckerd, 3-1, behind 22 kills from Mandy Rupert; Lenoir-Rhyne
defeated Valdosta State, 3-0; Valdosta State knocked off Augusta State, 3-0; Eckerd defeated Francis Marion, 3-1 and Wingate defeated Florida Tech, 3-1.

Action in the Classic concludes on Saturday with matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. AASU takes on Lenoir-Rhyne at 1:00 p.m. and finishes the tournament with a
7:00 p.m. tilt with PR-Rio Piedras.
