The Songbird Sounds Off: Spotlight on Florida Tech’s Music Program
It’s true. Little Miss “Already-Too-Involved-For-Her-Own-Good” Emilia is part of Florida Tech’s music program. I mean, who ever saw that coming, right?
Now, wait a second, Florida Tech – the hugely well-known tech school – has a music program? Why, but of course!
Lots of people don’t even know it exists, but we Panthers do indeed have our very own music program. Our administration knows how awesome and important music is to being a well-rounded student and how many benefits it has – in fact, our college president is even a drummer in our faculty band, TWITCHY.
We have several classes devoted to the study of music. These include the ensembles (string, wind, etc.), as well as my personal favorite, concert choir. When I first met my roommate Mariah, one of the first things she told me was that she was signing up for choir. I was immediately enthralled with the idea. I’d always wanted to be in a choir – but I had no idea whether I was good enough. Eventually, I decided to take a chance and sign up, since my friends assured me that I was not, in fact, tone deaf. The first day of choir was absolutely terrifying, because I’d never been in any kind of singing class or group before. What was I doing there? I wasn’t a singer!
I finally managed to calm down and just enjoy myself and it wasn’t long before I realized just how much I really did love choir. Our teacher was awesome, the music was super fun and the entire choir was like a family. It wasn’t long until my schedule filled up with singing engagements and my head filled up with song lyrics – and I loved every minute of it.
Even though Florida Tech is a tech school, we still have a great music program. One of the greatest things about it is that you don’t have to be a professional at what you’re doing. I mean, look at me. I turned into a singer overnight, despite all my reservations. I definitely succeeded at trying new things and broadening my horizons and I’m glad that I did. I’m a better-rounded person for it and I discovered that I really love to sing.

But wait, there’s more! Even if music classes aren’t your thing, there are still ways to get involved. My fellow blogger, Alejandra, covered what Players In Harmony (PIH) is all about in one of her posts, so be sure to check it out. I’m also involved with PIH. We’re an A cappella group that gets to sing at graduations and school events and all kinds of fun stuff. I got into it because I was involved in choir. Things can have a domino effect once you discover what you enjoy; soon enough, you become a full-fledged songbird.
Florida Tech students have a lot of skills and some of us (like my awesome musical friends) have talents beyond what you would expect. Moral of the story? Try new things! I’ve loved everything I’ve gotten involved with this semester, even if I’d never even thought about trying it before. We’re young, guys. There’s so much stuff we can learn and so many of our passions left to discover. It’s time to step outside your comfort zone and throw yourself into something. Trust me, you’ll find something, even if you find yourself looking in the strangest of places. Music program in a tech school, anyone?
