Florida Tech Honored as One of Top 200 Universities in the World
MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology has risen to the top 200 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013-2014. Only three universities in Florida made the list’s Top 200. The rankings, powered by Thomson Reuters, include the top 400 universities, worldwide.
These rankings are based on school scores in five categories: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
In the citations category, which Times Higher Education uses as its “research influence indicator,” Florida Tech scored a 99 out of a possible 100—higher than such well-respected universities as Yale, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Chicago and University of Pennsylvania.
According to THE’s web site, the citations score is based on the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars around the world, effectively illustrating how much a university is contributing to the sum of human knowledge.
“Our citations score means that the scholarly work of our faculty is significant, ground-breaking and so highly valued that researchers from all around the world are picking it up, learning from it, sharing it and building upon it,” said Florida Tech President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Catanese. “It certainly reminds us of our place in the global scientific community—right there with the very best.”
The United States has the most universities in the Top 200, with 77, followed by the United Kingdom, with 31 universities.Only three Florida universities, University of Florida, University of Miami and Florida Tech were in the top ranks.
