Florida Tech to Recognize Autism Art Contest Winner at Oct. 28-29 Conference

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology’s School of Psychology and The Scott Center for Autism Treatment have named nine-year-old Nathan Torsney of Melbourne as the winner of this year’s annual Scott Center for Autism Treatment art contest. He is a third grader at Croton Elementary School. Torsney’s artwork will be featured on the university’s Autism Conference 2011 brochure and he will be presented with an award at the Oct. 28-29 conference.

Torsney is interested in drawing, exploring the world using Google Earth, video games and Cub Scouts.

The fifth annual artwork contest recognizes the talents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and encourages children with ASD under the age of 18 to participate.

The conference, hosted by the School of Psychology, will be held on campus in the Gleason Performing Arts Center. This year’s theme is “taking Science-based Practice from the Ivory Tower to the Troops in the Trenches.” The conference will feature noted autism experts speaking on a variety of related topics. They will offer comprehensive information to assist educators, health care and social service providers, and families in developing effective educational and therapeutic care.
