Florida Tech Lecture July 2 Explores Florida Piracy Legacy

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The familiar Captain Jack Sparrow could be everyone’s favorite pirate. Although easy to love in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise,” he doesn’t, in fact, accurately depict the real pirates of Florida’s history.

To learn about these historic raiders, join Florida Institute of Technology’s Matthew Ruane on campus July 2 at 10 a.m. for his lecture, “Plundering Paradise: The Cultural Legacy of Pirates and Piracy in Florida.” The 90-minute presentation will explore how pirates shaped Florida’s history and affected its economic well-being.

Tickets are $20 and include lunch with Ruane at the Panther Dining Hall afterwards.
