FLORIDA TECH MEN AND WOMEN PLACE FOURTH AT 2006 SSC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

SUNRISE, Fla. (cross country) – Panthers take 4th place on both sides of the 2006 Sunshine State Conference Cross Country Championships.

The Florida Southern College men’s and women’s cross country teams each captured first place in their respective races at the 2006 Sunshine State
Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships, hosted by Nova Southeastern University, on Saturday morning at Markham Park. The FSC men claimed
their 10th consecutive men’s SSC championship and 11th in the last 12 years, while the Mocs women earned their first SSC title since 2001.

The Florida Southern men scored 16 team points as Eric Walker (25:10), Evander Jones (25:18), Lief Thomason (25:53) and Scott Mackley (25:56), finished 1st
through 4th, while Trevor Step (26:31) placed 6th and Jon Alter (27:10) 10th individually, over the men’s 8,000-meter course.

In the women’s 6000-meter race, Florida Southern’s Jael Koech (22:29) crossed the finish line first, followed in the top-10 individually by teammates
Carolyne Kwambai 2nd (23:08), Rachel Anderson 3rd (23:19) and Danielle Shimer (25:18) 10th for a team-best total of 16 points and the overall women’s
title.

The University of Tampa men placed three runners in the top-10 and scored 49 team points for a second place team finish, as Tony Nicolosi’s (26:07) was
5th, Jere Lautzenheiser (26:38) placed 7th and David Forry finished 8th with a 26:48 time.

Host Nova Southeastern University was third as a team with 79 points, as Eskender Abdalla (26:58) placed 9th, Robert Maughan (27:13) 11th and Brandon
Petersen (28:11) 17th in the men’s 8K race.

The Florida Tech men were fourth with 106 team points, paced by Jared Doescher (27:20) who was 17th and Joe Peterson (28:19) who finished 19th overall. The
Rollins College men placed fifth with 135 points, behind Patrick Flynn (29:32) and Robert Hoffman (30:03), who were 23rd and 24th respectively. Saint Leo
University placed sixth with 164 points, as Travis Robbins (29:00) was 21st and Tony Dirth (33:56) placed 36th for the Lions.

In the women’s 6K, four-time defending SSC champions the University of Tampa captured second place with 40 team points. The Spartans were led by Paige
Williams (23:24) who was 4th, Alysha Duffy (23:40) 5th, Jessica Forrester (24:16) 8th, Michelle Gabrielle (25:19) 11th and Dara Fox (25:28) who was 12th
overall.

The Nova Southeastern women grabbed third place with 79 team points, as Bethany Brenkus (24:14) was 7th, Stefi Cevallos (25:14) 9th and Tara Haddock
(26:30) 19th individually, for the host Sharks.

The Florida Tech women placed fourth with 90 team points, behind Megan Pierce (25:28) 14th, Carolyn Salois (25:55) 17th and Jamie Wagner (26:25) 19th
individually. Rollins College was fifth with a team total of 145 points, as Kristina Aronson (24:12) was 6th individually and Saint Leo University placed
sixth with 167 team points and a 33rd place finish by Julie Carusone (29:26).

In the men’s division, Walker, Thomason and Mackley repeated as All-SSC First Team selections, joined by newcomers Jones and Nicolosi. The 2006 All-SCC
Second Team includes top-10 finishers Step, Lautzenheiser, Forry, Eskender and Alter.

In the women’s division, Koech and Anderson are repeat All-SSC First Team selections, while Kwambai, Williams and Duffy are first timers. Aronson and
Shimer repeat as All-SSC Second Team choices, while Brenkus, Forrester and Cevallos are first-time honorees.
