Astronomy Lecturer to Discuss Astronomical Phenomena

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Tech’s Astronomy and Astrophysics Public Lecture Series
will present “Relativistic Jets: Nature’s Highest Energy Sources” on March 23 at 8 p.m.
The presentation, free to the community, will be in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex
auditorium, Room EC118.
The lecture is by Eric Perlman, associate professor in Florida Tech’s Department of Physics and Space Sciences. His talk is about the most energetic and
fastest objects in the known universe, relativistic jets. These are phenomena associated primarily with the accretion of black holes, such as those found
in the nuclei of quasars and other active galaxies as well as in the binary star systems in our own galaxy.
He will also discuss how orbiting observatories, such as the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory have led to a revolution in knowledge
about these mysterious objects.
There will be stargazing afterward, on the rooftop of the Olin Physical Sciences Building, weather-permitting. The F.W. Olin Engineering Center is located
