Florida Tech Speaker Looks at “Florida as Virtual Reality”
– As part of Florida Tech’s Humanities Lecture Series, Marcia Denius, assistant professor of humanities, will present “Florida as a Virtual Reality:
Reflections in Poetry” on March 17 at 7 p.m.
The presentation will trace the changes in the paradisiacal vision of Florida from the time of the earliest settlers to the present. Mythology, technology,
profit-seekers, and tourists have all had an impact on the perceived reality of the state and arguably, have replaced substance with style. Denius will
read poems by poets who have lived in, and written about, Florida, including those of Elizabeth Bishop, Hart Crane, Peter Meinke, and others.
Free and open to the public, the presentation will be on campus in the Denius Student Center’s Hartley Room.
