Florida Tech Still #1 Collegiate Surfing Team in Florida

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology’s Surf Team remained ahead of the three other Florida collegiate teams competing in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Interscholastic Championships earlier this June in Dana Point, Calif. The team finished sixth overall in the competition and team member Sebastian Moreno ranked fifth in the College Mens category.

Other team members were Billy Scott, Aaron Privett, Ashley Privett, Willy Cole, Pat Brennan, Ryan Barnett and Katie Spagnolo. All but Ashley Privett and Cole recently graduated.

Florida Tech qualified for the national contest after doing well in the NSSA East Coast Championships in April. This is just the third year of competition for the team.

The national competition fielded 17 teams. The three other Florida teams participating represented Flagler College, University of North Florida and University of Central Florida. Mira Costa College in Oceanside, Calif., won the first place crown.

Since graduation in May, Moreno has been running his own business, SeaBass Surf School, in Virginia Beach, Va.
