Astronomer to Discuss Hearts of Galaxies

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Tech’s Astronomy and Astrophysics Public Lecture Series will present “What Lurks in the Hearts of Galaxies?” on March 28 at 8 p.m.
The free presentation will be in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex auditorium, Room EC118.

The lecture is by Eric Perlman, Ph.D., associate professor in Florida Tech’s Department of Physics and Space Sciences. His talk will focus on the centers
of galaxies, their contents and especially their nuclei. In most bright galaxies, the most prominent difference between the nucleus and other parts of the
galaxy is the presence of a black hole with a mass of between 1 million and 10 billion suns. These supermassive black holes dramatically alter the dynamics
of the galactic center. Perlman will discuss how these black holes form in the nuclei of galaxies, how their presence is detected and the phenomena they
produce.

There will be stargazing afterward, on the rooftop of the Olin Physical Sciences Building, weather-permitting, including through the university’s new
32-inch telescope. The F.W. Olin Engineering Center is located on University Blvd.
