Fishing and Science Are Focus of Lagoon Conference

– Anglers and scientists will share the spotlight at the State of the Indian River Lagoon Conference on May 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Florida Tech in
Melbourne.

This year’s conference is geared toward the recreational fishing community, with participants discussing sport-fishing’s past, present and future in the
lagoon. Local anglers and scientists will present research findings and observations on fish populations in the lagoon and discuss what the public can do
to help to protect the resource.

Presentations will highlight key lagoon habitats and the status and trends of lagoon species. Scientists and representatives of environmental organizations
will also detail ongoing efforts to protect and restore the 156-mile-long estuary, home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals.

Sponsors include the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, The Nature Conservancy and Florida Tech, which is hosting the daylong event in the
Clemente Center, on campus. Additional research and nonprofit organizations will set up displays and distribute informational materials.
