MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology surfing team has won the championship title in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Southeast/North College Conference, nabbing its fourth victory of the 2011-2012 season. Florida Tech beat teams from the University of Central Florida and Daytona State College. All three teams will compete again in the NSSA East Coast Championships at New Smyrna Beach, April 12-15.
“The 2012 NSSA Easterns is the culmination of the 2012 NSSA East Coast season where schools from the entire east coast will compete for the regional title,” said Sebastian Moreno, team captain. “Our team has already won the season title and we will use that momentum to upset the defending champion, University of North Carolina Wilmington, in the next contest.”
Moreno finished first in the Men’s Shortboard final with an aerial maneuver in the last seconds of his performance. Co-captain Justin Ellingham finished second; teammates Billy Scott and Aaron Privett finished fourth and sixth respectively. In the Men’s Longboard category, Will Cole finished second and teammate Privett finished third. Other teammates who participated in the contest include Pat Reilly and Ryan Barnett; Allison Randolph and Ashley Privett, who finished fifth and sixth in the Women’s Division.
The Florida Tech Student Government Association sponsors the surf team. The team is accepting sponsorships and donations to help its members compete in the National Championships in California in June. For more information, send an email to Moreno at email@example.com.
Those who are interested in learning how to surf or in surfing in general, can join the team’s club on campus. Meetings are held in the Crawford Building room 220, on select Thursdays at 8 p.m.
