US News: Florida Tech a Top National University

Undergraduate Engineering Program Also Rated Among Nation’s Best

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Institute of Technology is again among the best national universities in the country, according to the 2020 rankings from U.S. News & World Report. Florida Tech’s inclusion in the top tier universities in the United States is its 10th consecutive appearance in the influential guide for prospective students and their families.

The National Universities category includes institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs, and emphasize faculty research. Overall, the Best Colleges rankings provide data on more than 1,900 colleges, with rankings for nearly 1,400 institutions. Florida Tech is No. 43 in the U.S. among universities with a full-time undergraduate population of 5,000 students or fewer.

U.S. News considers 15 metrics when ranking schools for academic excellence, placing the largest emphasis on a college’s ability to retain and graduate its students. Other factors include class size, undergraduate academic reputation and how much a school spends per student on instruction and other related educational expenses.

Florida Tech also ranked among the top schools in the nation in undergraduate engineering programs at universities that offer doctoral degrees in engineering, a listing based on the judgments of engineering school deans and senior faculty at peer institutions.

And Florida Tech was again named one of the top national universities for diversity in 2020, with 28 percent of its 2018-19 undergraduate class comprised of international students. Florida Tech was on the list with institutions including Carnegie Mellon, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Harvard University.

“International students can add diversity to a college or university, enriching the experience of other students on campus,” the magazine wrote. “Schools with a strong global presence often have a wealth of cultural groups and events, allowing international students an opportunity to share their food, music and traditions with their U.S. peers.”
