Florida Tech Hosts High School Business Ethics Competition
Nov. 3 Event Supported by L3Harris Corporation, Community Credit Union and Brevard Public Schools
MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Bisk College of Business at Florida Tech will hold its 24th Annual High School Business Ethics Competition starting at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3.
The competition will feature teams from schools in Brevard County and surrounding areas. It is designed to encourage high school students to explore the subject of ethics, reflect on how ethical principles are related to decision-making in the business world, and evaluate the ethical adequacy of actual decisions made by managers.
The event is supported by L3Harris Corporation, Community Credit Union and Brevard Public Schools.
There are four goals of the competition:
- Enhance the knowledge of ethics and how this knowledge relates to the business world.
- Determine how to apply ethical tests when faced with an ethical problem and how to defend choices.
- Grow team skills and experience the challenge and enjoyment of interschool scholastic competition.
- Provide a forum for future business leaders to interact with experienced professionals to discuss the role of ethics in business.
Teams are limited to between three and four members, including no more than one senior. Judges come from a variety of career fields and include members of the Bisk College of Business Advisory Board as well as several community members.
The competition will feature two rounds:
Morning Elimination Round: Teams will develop and analyze solutions to a business ethics and leadership problem concerning sales presentations of a firm’s security systems compared to the competior’s systenms. The top four teams will advance to the ranking round.
Ranking Round: The four final teams are given one hour to formulate an ethical solution to a different situation, unknown to them until their preparation time begins.
The competition will award anywhere from $144,000 to $192,000 in merit scholarships and cash to the top teams, depending on team size. All participants are guaranteed a minimum merit scholarship of $12,000, renewable for three additional years, if they enroll at Florida Tech.
