FloridaTech Panthers Grab Season Opener Win
MELBOURNE, FL — The Florida Tech Women’s Soccer Team ushered in the Fidgi Haig era with an impressive 2-1 victory over south region foe Alabama-Huntsville
(0-1). Tech is now 1-0 with this impressive start after finishing off last year’s program being shutout 4-0 against the Chargers on their home turf in
2004.
The Panther’s struck first when senior forward Kelli Huarte (Manteca, California) netted the first goal of the game off an assist from junior midfielder
Miranda Tessier (Vero Beach, Florida).
The Alabama Huntsville Chargers answered back in the minute when a goal kick was attempted and when senior forward Lindsey Schemenaur (Woodridge, Illinois)
intercepted the play and kicked the ball into the Panthers goal to tie the game.
The game winning goal at the 82nd minute when Huarte once again booted the ball in the back of the goal off a cross from sophomore forward Ericka Hildreth
(Cocoa Beach, Florida).
Sophomore keeper Erica Wales (Huntsville, Alabama) was awarded the win in a bittersweet victory against her hometown university. The Chargers senior goalie
Sarah Sollie (Decatur, Alabama) suffered the loss in their season opener.
Tech will be back in action on Saturday, September 3rd at 2:00 p.m. hosting Mount Olive College at the Rick Stottler Field.
