Foosaner Art Museum’s Next Gallery Talk Centers on Artist Leslie Wayne’s Sculptural Paintings Feb. 21

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Foosaner Art Museum of Florida Institute of Technology will host a special Gallery Talk with Carla Funk, director of university museums, Feb 21. Funk will lead visitors through the museum’s current exhibition, I Am Nature: Paintings by Leslie Wayne and will contextualize Wayne’s work within the framework of abstract expressionism. A pivotal art movement, this was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence. The 10:30 a.m. event is free and open to the public.

Wayne is inspired by her memories of growing up in scenic Southern California and 19th Century romantic landscape painters. Her artwork uses paint as form by pulling, scraping, folding, cutting and plastering it into many layers on her large, horizontal, multi-paneled works. Her art expresses the forces of shifting tectonic plates, movement of water and man’s toxic impact on the environment. The museum will continue to exhibit I am Nature through March 17.

Currently residing in New York, Wayne began her art studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed them at the Parsons School of Design in New York. After her move to New York she abandoned plein air painting to explore intuitive painting. Her art has been showcased in museums and galleries across the United States and as far away as Sweden. Wayne was the recipient of a New York Foundation of Arts Fellowship in

Painting and has earned grants from important foundations, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

The Foosaner Art Museum is located at 1463 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children and students with ID and free on Thursdays and always for Florida Tech faculty, staff and students with their ID.
