Florida Tech Professor Receives Contract to Classify Infrasonic Signals

– Dr. Fredric Ham, Harris professor and interim dean of the Florida Tech College of Engineering, has received a $175,000
Army Research Laboratory contract for the first phase of work to classify infrasonic signals of interest using a neural network classifier.

Ham is the Florida Tech representative to the Infrasound Consortium for Applied Research. The aim of the consortium is to study atmospheric and geophysical
processes that generate low-frequency sound, that is, infrasound. He is also the program co-chair for the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks
2005, which will be held in Montreal.

Ham’s research interests include applications of neural networks; infrasound signal processing, specifically, classifying infrasonic events using neural
networks for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty; biomedical signal processing and biosensors; adaptive signal processing; digital image processing;
and pattern recognition.
