Florida Tech Is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Sponsor, Supports Build to Begin Jan. 3

Florida Institute of Technology is on board, helping to make the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on the Space Coast a success. Faculty, staff and students are joining in this local effort of the Emmy® Award-winning hit reality show to construct a new, fully custom house for a deserving Space Coast family in one week.

The kick-off pep rally is Jan. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. for volunteers and the community at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Rocket Garden. The location is at SR 405, KSC. The rally is aimed at generating excitement and providing information about what to expect during the build week.

“The university is a sponsor of this worthwhile effort and we are mobilizing the campus community and alumni to volunteer their time and skills to support the project,” said university President Anthony J. Catanese. “This involvement fits perfectly with our deeply-held tradition of ‘High Tech with a Human Touch’ and our continuing focus on civic engagement,” he added.

Additionally, the university’s Department of Marine and Environmental Systems has committed to keeping the volunteers informed of the weather through a real-time weather widget. It will be viewable on the volunteer website.

Volunteers for a wide range of tasks are being sought. They may be experienced people in the trades or anyone who simply wants to help. Information is available and sign-up will be facilitated at the website: www.extrememakeoverspacecoast.com. The public is also invited to donate cash to the build, which will be presented to the recipient family.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in its eighth season. The show airs locally on Sundays, 8 to 9 p.m., EST, on the ABC-TV network.
