Florida Tech Coordinates Worldwide Conference for Computer Scientists

– Florida Tech will welcome world-renown experts and accomplished researchers in data mining as it coordinates the Third IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers) International Conference on Data Mining. The conference will be held Nov. 19-22 at the Holiday Inn, Melbourne Oceanfront, in
Indialantic. The conference received 501 paper submissions; 118 (24%) of these were accepted for publication and presentation.

According to the Gartner Group, data mining is the process of discovering meaningful new correlations, patterns and trends by sifting through large amounts
of data stored in repositories, using pattern recognition technologies as well as statistical and mathematical techniques.

In addition to researchers presenting their latest advances in data mining, invited speakers include Prof. Gene W. Myers, University of California,
Berkeley, presenting “Pattern Discovery for Genomics,” and Dr. Philip S. Yu, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, presenting “Real-Time Monitoring and
Surveillance Using Data Stream Mining.”

Focused workshops on Nov. 19 will cover such topics as clustering large data sets, data mining for computer security, and foundations and new directions in
data mining. Tutorials will be offered on the same day and include “Bioinformatics and Machine Learning Methods” and “Advances in Clustering and
Applications.” Also, a panel discussion will review the opportunities for funding available for data mining research and applications.
