FLORIDA TECH HOSTS 2007 KEUPER CUP REGATTA
FELLESMERE, Fla. — This year marks the 27th year of The Keuper Cup Regatta first held in the Spring of 1980. The regatta will take place on Saturday, March
10th at Canal 54 in Fellesmere, Florida. There will be eleven races in total throughout the day with the first heat race set to go off at 9:00 a.m. Florida
Tech’s President Dr. Anthony Catanese will be on hand to present the winner’s with the cups named after former president Jerome Keuper and his wife Natalie
Keuper. The Keupers’ were strong supporters of both Panther athletics and the crew programs during their time at Florida Tech.
Four men’s and four women’s crew teams will be represented at the Keuper Cup showcasing four different institutions including Temple University,
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Stetson University, and Florida Tech. The match-up between Temple and Florida Tech will be a key early season races
as both teams are eyeing for gold later on in the season at the Dad Vail Regatta held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest
collegiate regatta in the United States. The Temple Owls have been a perennial powerhouse in men’s crew for many years and Florida Tech is looking to break
their stride this season.
Last season, Temple University took back the Jerome P. Keuper Cup from the Florida Tech men after winning the final race of the day with a time of 6:42.0
three seconds faster than the Panthers. Florida Tech finished second with a time of 6:45.6. Both teams dealt with a head wind on the 2,000 meter course,
last year Tech managed to break five minutes on a perfect day, but they placed second with a final time of 6:45.6. Embry-Riddle finished with the bronze
time of 7:30.3.
On the women’s side, Temple again managed to take home the Natalie Keuper Cup with a winning time of 7:45.0. The Panthers finished 13 seconds slower still
grabbing the silver 7:57.5 from the Division I full “scholar-shipped” boat. Temple’s “B” boat pulled up the rear with a time of 8:28.7.
Florida Tech grabbed the gold in three varsity events including the Men’s Pair with a winning time of 9:25.6 with rowers sophomores Steve Lindstrom
(Blackstone, Mass.) and Tim Osterhout (Pensacola, Fla.) defeating Stetson. The Crimson and Gray also took the Men’s Novice Eight tallying 7:20.7 on the
race clock in 2006.
Two years in a row, 2005-2006, the women’s varsity four came out ahead with the events’ best time of 9:18.3 finishing ahead of both Stetson boats and
Embry-Riddle. Tech’s WV4 included coxswain Desiree Tetrault (Naples, Fla.), four seat-Safia Tappan (Sarasota, Fla.), three seat-Jennifer Johnson (Portland,
Ore.), two seat- Jennifer Hefley (Wexford, Penn.) and bow-Morgan Tweedie (Osprey, Fla.)
