Florida Tech Women’s Business Center Presents ‘From Baghdad to Beijing and Beyond’ May 3
MELBOURNE, FLA. – The Women’s Business Center at Florida Institute of Technology and the Space Coast Chapter of Women in Defense present the next installment in the Sharp Woman Luncheon Series, “From Baghdad to Beijing and Beyond,” with Army veteran Melissa Stockwell, Friday, May 3. Underwritten by Wells Fargo, the event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne.
A Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient, Stockwell will share her story as a second lieutenant in the United States Army transportation corps. She became an amputee following a 2004 roadside bomb attack and was the first female soldier to lose a limb from the war in Iraq. After she retired from the Army, Stockwell began a new career as a parathlete and went on to become a paralympics swimmer in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. A New York City marathon finisher, she is also the current three-time paratriathlon world champion and will complete her first Ironman competition this year. She hopes to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, where the paratriathlon will make its event debut.
Stockwell is a level 1-certified triathlon coach and a co-founder of the Dare2tri Paratriathlon Club. She also organized the Chicago Blade Runners, a running group for all abilities, while serving on the Wounded Warrior Project board of directors. The Sharp Woman series is underwritten by Wells Fargo. This program of networking luncheons is designed to provide participants with tools and skills to use in everyday life to adjust to the new economy, be successful and live a rewarding, purposeful life. Participants learn sound money management, smart investing for the future and retirement, how to repair and keep good credit, what to do if the mortgage is upside down, how to keep a mortgage afloat, how not to get scammed by grants or loans with huge interest rates, how to create a life plan that gives back and reflects one’s values, voice and vision, and, overall, how to be more financially sound and secure. The program also provides networking leads, mentors for life and great ideas to promote economic empowerment.
