Nov. 16 Autism-Related Workshop: Compliance between Adult Instructions and Autistic Children

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology’s School of Psychology offers free monthly workshops of particular interest to parents, educators and professionals who deal with the issues of autism. Part of the Issues of Autism Workshop Series, they are scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Scott Center for Autism Treatment Seminar Room.

The Nov. 16 workshop, “Increasing Compliance with Instructions in Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities,” will be presented by David Wilder, professor, Florida Tech Applied Behavior Analysis. His presentation will focus on the importance of compliance with adult and peer instructions for children with autism. Methods of compliance will also be discussed.

“Although seemingly simple, this skill is considered to be one of the foundation skills for learning a variety of more complex social, academic and pre-academic skills,” said Wilder. “It is also predictive of the frequency and severity of problem behavior later in development.”

The Seminar Room is located on the second floor of the Scott Center for Autism Treatment at the south end of the Florida Tech campus. Parking is available off Psychology Place, near University Boulevard.
