Scott Center for Autism Treatment Presents ‘Behavior Basics Boot Camp’ July 29

The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at Florida Institute of Technology presents Behavior Basics Boot Camp: Making Your Classroom More Manageable July 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., in the center’s seminar room. An additional hands-on session on planning for your classroom is scheduled for 3-5 p.m.

This is of particular interest to K-12 teachers. The cost is $50 and includes lunch.

Content includes issues in managing challenging behavior. These include identifying and assessing why challenging behavior occurs in the classroom; general prevention strategies for managing challenging behavior; choosing interventions; and taking data on behaviors while teaching and determining when outside support is needed. Also to be discussed are such general classroom structure and strategies as setting up individual and group token economies, group contingencies, classroom and individual schedules, the basics of reinforcement and getting students to participate.

The ‘boot camp’ will be led by Meagan Gregory, Ph.D., BCBA-D, and Alison Betz, Ph.D., BCBA-D.

Gregory received a master’s degree with a specialization in behavior analysis from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In 2010 she earned her doctorate in behavior analysis. While at the University of Florida, she worked with clients diagnosed with Prader Willi Syndrome and classified as having “intensive behavior.” She is now an assistant professor at Florida Tech and a supervisor at the Scott Center for Autism Treatment.

Betz received her Ph.D. with a specialization in behavior analysis in 2009 at Utah State University. While there she worked as a behavioral and autism consultant for three school districts across Utah. After earning her doctoral degree, she completed a post-doctoral internship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Munroe-Meyer Institute. She is now an assistant professor in the School of Psychology at Florida Tech and a faculty supervisor at the Scott Center for Autism Treatment.
