Men’s and Women’s Tennis Pull Off Seven Wins in 1st Day of ITA Regionals

LAKELAND, Fla. – (Tennis) Four Florida Tech singles players advanced to the second round of the 2006 Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Tournament today on the
campus of host Florida Southern College. Head Coach Bill Macom entered four men and two women into the regional tennis play.

On the men’s side seniors’ Keith Kessler (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who was seeded 7th, and Clifford Giel (Savaneta, Aruba) each defeated their opponents in the
opening 64 round. Kessler won a tight battle 7-6 (5), 6-3, as did Giel shutting down his opponent 6-0, 6-1.

Fellow senior Christian Smith (Arouca, Trinidad) and freshman Jonathan Hanna (Nassau, Bahamas) each fell in their first round matches. Both players took
two points from one of their sets for the day. Smith was eliminated in the back-draw falling 6-1, 6-1, while Hanna continues on in the back-draw after
advancing due to a default victory.

Giel and Kessler both fell in the in the second round with Giel taking it to a tie-breaker ultimately falling 6-1, 2-6, 10-8. The #4 seeded pair of Giel
and Kessler swept their competition 8-1 in the first round of doubles; they will face a Florida Gulf Coast tandem at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.

On the women’s side sophomore returnee Michaela Horvathova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and freshman newcomer Natalia Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) both were
undefeated on the day. Horvathova won her first round singles match 6-1, 6-1, while Ramos, making her collegiate debut, defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-0.
Both women will play tomorrow in the second round.

The duo of Horvathova and Ramos notched their first doubles win taking the first round 8-5. They will face the #2 seeded team from Lynn tomorrow in the
second round of women’s doubles.
