Melbourne Resident Earns Florida Tech Skelly Fellowship

– Diana Syvertsen, of Melbourne, has earned a $10,000 Gertrude E. Skelly Foundation fellowship for Florida Tech’s fall 2005 semester and will begin a
master’s program in physical oceanography. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics
from Kean University in Union, N.J.

Syvertsen’s scholarship was funded by the Gertrude E. Skelly Foundation with a match by the F.W. Olin Foundation of New York. It was established in 1991 to
provide medical care and educational opportunities and is arranged by Erik Edward Joh, Esq.

The Skelly fellowship is awarded to deserving graduate students in the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems.
The department integrates the expertise and skills of scientists, engineers and resource managers.

The faculty includes individuals devoted to research involving the study of ocean waves and currents; coastal processes and structures; estuarine
hydrology; planktonic and benthonic organisms; meteorology and climatology; hydroacoustics; coastal and resource management; marine vehicles; biofouling;
trace-metal and pollution identification and distribution; computer modeling; remote sensing and instrumentation.
