Taylor Named Head of Humanities and Communication

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Mary Beth Kenkel, dean of Florida Tech’s College of Psychology and Liberal Arts, has named Robert Taylor the new head of the Department of
Humanities and Communication. Taylor, an associate professor of history, is the noted author of seven historical works, including his most recent, Florida,
An Illustrated History.
“We were fortunate to have outstanding internal candidates. Dr. Taylor is a remarkable scholar, teacher and colleague,” said Kenkel. “We are confident that
he will build upon the strong traditions of the department and find new ways to advance the department’s mission both within the university and the larger
community.”
For Taylor, a president emeritus of the Florida Historical Society, the new position will allow a historian to focus on the future.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to serve my colleagues and the university. I look forward to guiding the department into its next 50 years,” said
Taylor.
Taylor’s sixth book, Florida in the Civil War, earned the 2002 Charlton Tebeau Award for the best book on Florida history. Taylor, a Palm Bay resident, has
been a working historian for more than two decades.
