Panther Softball Sweeps Saint Leo to Remain Perfect in SSC Play
MELBOURNE, Fla. (softball)– The Florida Tech softball team swept a doubleheader from Saint Leo University Thursday afternoon at Nancy Bottge Field to
close out a three-game sweep of the Lions and remain unbeaten in Sunshine State Conference play. Three Panthers Pick up Three Hits; Husband Earns Two
Wins; Lugo Slams a Three-Run Homer enroute to shutting down conference foe Saint Leo (1-8, 0-3)
The Panthers (10-9 overall, 3-0 SSC) won the first game 4-3 victory in 10 innings, before posting a 5-2 win in the six-inning nightcap, before the game was
called due to darkness.
In the first game, Florida Tech used some late-inning magic, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit and secure the
win. Junior Danielle Stanley (Grayson, Ga.) and senior Katie Naumoff (Poland, Ohio) opened the frame with back-to-back singles before senior catcher
Kristen Fettes (Deltona, Fla.) was hit by a pitch from Lions’ junior starter Kiki Von Holt (New Port Richey, Fla.) that loaded the bases with no outs.
Saint Leo designated player turned reliever sophomore Ashley Urbanik (Riverview, Fla.) walked the first batter she faced, junior Ashley Lugo (Cape Coral,
Fla.), to force home Stanley for Tech’s first run of the inning. Senior Laura Chisena (Ocoee, Fla.) reached on a fielder’s choice that plated Naumoff and
tied the game at 3-3. With the bases still loaded with no outs, junior Alexandrea Weigand (Tallahassee, Fla.) was hit by an Urbanik offering to send home
Fettes with the game-winning run.
The Panthers scored the first run of the game in the second inning without the benefit of a hit, as two Saint Leo miscues led to an unearned run.
The Lions knotted the score at 1-1 with a tally in the fourth inning, as senior centerfielder Christina Van Tassel (Valparaiso, Fla.) led off with a triple
to the right-center field gap and came home on a sacrifice fly by Urbanik.
Panther hurlers Amber West (JR, Apopka, Fla.) and Judith Husband (SR, Wewahitchka, Fla.) matched zeroes with Von Holt for the next five innings before both
teams combined for five runs in the exciting 10th inning.
The stingy West allowed just one run on four hits in 5-1/3 innings of work, striking out four and walking one. She did not figure in the decision.
Crimson and gray hurler Husband picked up the win and improved to 6-1 on the young season. Husband scattered two runs on two hits in 4-2/3 innings of work.
She struck out three and walked one.
Naumoff was the sole Panther to register two hits in the opening game, while senior Allison Flynn (Miami, Fla.) also tallied a couple of hits for Saint
Leo.
Von Holt (0-4) suffered the loss, tossing nine innings of six-hit ball. She allowed four runs; three earned, walked two and struck out five.
The second game started off the same way that the first game ended, as Florida Tech erupted for three runs in the first inning, as Lugo slugged a three-run
home run down the left field line that scored Naumoff and Fettes.
Saint Leo got an unearned run back in the second inning as Ally Maddox scampered home from second base on an errant throw.
Tech added two more runs in the third inning, as freshman Leah Tymeson (Lincoln University, Penn.) roped a two-run double with two outs that scored junior
Jen Wise (Auburndale, Fla.) and Chisena.
The Lions trimmed the lead to 5-2 in the sixth after Van Tassel led off with her second triple of the day and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Urbanik.
Play continued into the seventh inning before the umpires called the contest due to darkness. Due to NCAA rules, the score from the final complete inning
of play — the sixth — was ruled final and the Panthers’ three-game series sweep was complete.
Husband (7-1) picked up her second win of the day, pitching a six-inning, complete game, five-hitter. She allowed two runs; one earned, struck out one and
did not walk a batter. Von Holt (0-5) suffered the loss for Saint Leo.
Fettes, Chisena and West racked up two hits apiece for the victorious Panthers, while Van Tassel managed two hits for the Lions (1-8, 0-3). The Florida
Tech trio of Naumoff, Fettes and Chisena collected three hits each in the twinbill, while Van Tassel and Flynn did the same for Saint Leo.
Florida Tech heads to Clearwater on Friday for the first of five games they will play in three days at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational. The Panthers
will square off against Florida Gulf Coast at 4:30 p.m., followed by a tilt with Palm Beach Atlantic at 7:00 p.m.
