Panthers Advance to Semi-Finals After 11th Round Shootout Win
WINTER PARK, Fla. (men’s soccer) – Senior captain Brian Lundy (Satellite Beach, Fla.) advances the Panthers to the Sunshine State Semi-finals after his
11th round penalty kick goal over the Spartans of Tampa University in the first round of the SSC playoffs.
The bitter rivalry between the two teams played out through the game as the anticipated match up between Florida Tech and Tampa University went under way
at Rollins College in the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The Spartans jumped out early as they notched the first goal of the
match off a header from a corner in the 7th minute. Striker, Ricardo Cardoso scored the goal and Gregg Emmerman was rewarded the assist.
Despite the early let up going down 1-0, the Panthers settled in ending with several scoring chances to tie the game but couldn’t convert going into half.
As the second half got underway, Tampa had a chance to put the game away as a foul was called inside the Panthers penalty box awarding Tampa’s Chad Cardoso
a penalty kick. Cardoso missed the PK wide keeping the score at 1-0.
Relieved and ready to go after the missed shot, the Panthers picked up their attack and kept pressure on the Spartans defense with constant runs through
the middle of the field. Freshman, Ross Allen (Castel, Guernsey, United Kingdom) had a run at the ball through the back line of Tampa’s defense were
Tampa’s goalie came out challenging the ball taking Allen out ending as a penalty kick for the Panthers. Senior, Bello Illiassou (Bitam, Gabon, Africa)
took the scoring opportunity scoring the game tying goal in the 57th minute.
With the game tied at one and 30 minutes still to play in regulation, the teams battled back and forth pushing to win the game. Unfortunately, neither team
could notch that game winning goal sending the game into overtime.
Overtime continued much like the end of regulation with both sides not finishing their scoring opportunities sending the game into a second overtime.
Despite the double overtime, the game ended tied 1-1 leading into a shootout.
Sophomore Goalkeeper Cory Collins ( Melbourne, Fla.) had eleven saves and allowed only one goal for the tie.
Ten players on both sides were rewarded chances at the penalty marker but the shootout lasted until the 11th round, the second go around of penalty shots.
The ten players selected by coach Chan were: Brian Lundy (Satellite Beach, Fla), Ryan Gilletti (Melbourne, Fla), Michael Blimline (Reading PA), Ross Allen
(Castel, Guernsey, UK), Bello Illiassou (Bitam, Gabon, Africa), Ryan Hagerty (Palm Bay, Fla.), Donald Spielman (Melbourne, Fla.), Jon Rowley (Rockledge,
FLa.), Brad Laporte (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), and Chad Mason (Landsdale, PA) shooting in that order.
Lundy missed the first, Gilletti made the second, Blimline made the third tying the shootout at 2-2. Allen retied the game at 3-3 and Illiassou tied the
game at 4-4 at the end of the 5th round.
With the start of the sudden death shooting, both the Spartans’ player and Panthers’ player (Hagerty )missed their shots. Spielman retied the shootout at
5-5 and Rowley tied the shootout at 6-6 after their attempts. The Spartans player and Panthers’ (Laporte) missed their opportunities in the 9th round but
Chad Mason tied the shootout in the 10th at 7-7. With the rotation finding Lundy again who missed on his first chance he found himself staring at the win
after goalie Cory Collins (Melbourne, Fla.) made a huge stop diving to his left. Goalie,Collins made two huge stops to keep the Panthers in the shootout
including the 10th round diving stop to allow Lundy his chance at redemtion.
Lundy redeemed himself deflecting his shot off the Spartans goalie winning the game for the Panthers and moving them on to the semi-finals of the Sunshine
State Conference Championships.
The Panthers play the hosted team Rollins Tars on Saturday, October 28th at 3 pm in Winter Park, Florida at the Barker Family Stadium in the Quarter-Finals
of the Sunshine State Conference Championships.
