Professor Presents Movie Madness: The Potential of Survey Science, Oct. 28

MELBOURNE, FLA.—The next presentation of Florida Institute of Technology’s Astronomy and Astrophysics Lecture Series, “Movie Madness: The Potential of Survey Science,” will be given by Hakeem Oluseyi, assistant professor, Florida Tech Department of Physics and Space Sciences. The free lecture will be Oct. 26 from 8 to 9 p.m. in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex, Room EC118, on campus. There will be a rooftop public star viewing following the presentation if weather permits.

“The field of astronomy is undergoing a revolution as astronomers evolve from using still photos of individual interesting objects to HD multicolor movies of the entire sky. Such new technology promises to revolutionize many fields of astronomy including studies of the dark energy that accelerates the universe, of the dark matter that drives the evolution of the universe’s normal matter, of the origin and evolution of galaxies, and studies that discover and characterize extrasolar planets,” said Oluseyi.

This talk will describe current studies of the Florida Tech Survey Science and Time-Domain Informatics research group, including preparations for the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) survey.
