Panthers Baseball Splits Double Header against Lynn
MELBOURNE, Fla. – In day two of the Sunshine State Conference three game series, the Panthers came out victorious in the first game 3-2 winning in the
bottom of the ninth but lost in game two 7-3 to the Fighting Knights of Lynn University.
In game one, a late surge in the bottom of the ninth off a three hit inning drove the winning run in for the Panthers winning 3-2.
Lynn scored the first run of the game in the third inning off of a two hit inning with the run scoring off a wild pitch. The Panthers wouldn’t score until
the fifth inning where a lead off double by Brendan Twomey (Boca Raton, Fla.) put him in scoring position. Two batters later Eamonn Powers (Staten Island,
NY) would drive Twomey in off the second double of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
With both starting pitchers pitching a fairly strong game, the game would go knotted up until the 8th where Lynn would get the bases loaded and score their
second run of the game off a bases loaded walk. Tech would get out the inning and stop the Knights threat from a fielder’s choice tag at third by Eric
Trillas (Hialeah, Fla.).
In the Panthers last at bat with two outs on the board, Tech would draw a walk and get the runner to second off a stolen base from pinch runner Dane
Maglich (Sarasota, Fla.). A base hit by Sam Palace (Clarkston, Mich.) drove in the tying run from second with Palace advancing to second on the throw to
home plate. Trillas whose lone hit of the game came in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run from third with a base hit into the right center
gap to get the victory 3-2 over the Knights.
Pitching strong for Tech was Mike Piazza (Pt. St. Lucie, Fla.) going seven innings striking out five Knights and only giving up one run. Brett Backman
(Ontario, Canada) received the win for the Panthers and is now 3-2 on the year.
In game two of the double header, the Knights starting pitcher Lonnie Patterson (Chicago, Ill.) pitched a complete seven inning game for his third victory
on the season as the Knights came out swinging totaling 15 hits scoring seven runs for the 7-3 victory over Florida Tech.
Lynn scored one run early in the first with three base hits at their first at bat. The Knights would continue their scoring in the third scoring two more
runs with four hits in the inning. After a quick one, two, three fourth inning, Lynn would ahead and put four more runs up in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.
Tech being shutout through the first four with only one hit from Steve Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario) would put a run up as Sam Palace would be driven in
by a base hit from Trevor Hearl (Cape Coral, Fla.) from second as Sam hit a double into the right center gap.
Again Lynn would score one run with the bases loaded in the sixth from an infield single to go up 7-1. At the Panthers last at bat, they would threaten by
loading the bases and score one run as JD Davidson (Naples, Fla.) hit into a double play driving in Palace from third. A balk called by the umpire
would push the second run of the inning across for the Panthers third run and final run of the game.
Tech finishing the SSC Home Opener moves to 16-7 overall and is now 2-1 in the conference after hosting Lynn University. Tech will host Post University on
Tuesday, March 13th at the Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field for their next game with a start time approx 3pm.
