Panthers Defeated by #1 Tampa in Mid-Week Battle
TAMPA, Fla. (baseball) – The Panthers took on the #1 Tampa Spartans in a non-conference pitchers dual ending in a 3-1 Spartan victory.
Sophomore pitcher Jake Koch (Orlando, Fla.) and Tampa’s John Wiedenbauer found themselves in a pitching dual as there were only allowed two hits in the
first three innings of play. Both the hits were recorded by Spartan hitters.
The forth is when the Spartans drew first blood scoring one run off of a lead off double off the base of the right field wall. A sac bunt moved the Spartan
over and then a sac fly to deep center pushed the first run of the game cross the plate. Koch would get out of the inning on one of his 13 ground outs on
the night to the shortstop Steve Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario). Tampa would go to score their second run of the game in the fifth inning giving the #1
Spartans a 2-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
In the sixth, the Panthers sought their first opportunity to do some damage as they were able to load the bases with no outs. Center fielder Nick Brennan
(Detroit, Mich.) got the Panthers lone hit on the night driving the ball down the third base line moving JD Davidson (Naples, Fla.) to third. Tech’s next
two batters were put on from walks which drove in their first and only run of the game. Tampa would get out of the inning without any more damage off a
ground ball double play involving the first basemen and the force out at home.
Koch still on the mound in the seventh allowed one more run putting the Spartans up 3-1. Koch would go to finish out the seventh inning allowing three run
on eight hits. Jake finished with two strikeouts but utilized his defense behind him getting the Tampa batters to groundout a total of 13 times. Koch
received the loss putting his starting record to 1-1 on the season.
Spartans freshman starting pitcher John Wiedenbauer (Ormond, Fla.) earned his victory in a collegiate uniform going five innings strong striking out eight
Panther batters with no hits and allowing no runs.
Brennan earned the Panthers only hit off a double down the third base line while Condotta got the RBI off a five pitch bases loaded walk.
Tech now 7-3 on the season is back in action on Thursday, February 22nd against Bently College (MA) at home on the Andy Seminick-Les Hall Baseball Field
with a start time of 2pm.
